Diversity and Inclusion Statement
The Grierson Trust is committed to encouraging diversity and inclusion in all its work. We champion creative excellence – regardless of background – through the annual Grierson Awards and through the Grierson DocLab training schemes.
We recognise that it is not only right and just that diversity and inclusion are at the centre of our work, but that fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce helps to support creativity and innovation, which are essential to thriving documentary film and television industries
From 2020 we are updating our judging criteria to include production diversity and inclusion. We will be asking entrants to provide additional information for their entry into the competition. We would like to hear from entrants about the steps they have taken to ensure that diversity and inclusion practices are embedded in the making of their film or series. Juries will be interested to know what efforts have been made to include under-represented groups both on and off screen; as well as any themes and narratives that address diversity and inclusion.
By doing this we are also seeking to improve our understanding of the industry landscape to enable us to promote good practice and raise the issues around diversity and inclusion in the film and television industries.
We closely monitor our calls for applications in order to target under-represented groups in the television industry to include, but not limited to, people from minority ethnic backgrounds, disabled people, women and LGBTQ+ people. It also includes people from lower socio-economic groups and those from outside London.
We are committed to supporting diversity and to creating an inclusive culture and working environment. We recognise the importance that equality legislation has to play in promoting equality and eliminating unlawful discrimination. Beyond ensuring equal opportunities, we aim for our workforce to be diverse and for our culture and environment to be inclusive, where all people are accepted and treated with respect and are able to reach their full potential and deliver their best work. This policy applies to our Trustees and all employed and freelance staff.
