Radio Times, the UK’s biggest selling quality magazine, is sponsoring the Readers’ Choice Award at The British Documentary Awards 2014 – the only category of the prestigious awards decided by public vote.

  • Bedlam (C4)
  • Benefits Street (C4)
  • Educating Yorkshire (C4)
  • Horizon: Cats (BBC Two)
  • Long Lost Family (ITV)
  • Pain Pus and Poison: The Story of Modern Medicine (BBC Four)

Considered to be the Oscars of the documentary world and now in their 42nd year, The Grierson Awards, in association with Sky Atlantic and Shell, celebrate the best in documentary film-making and winning a Grierson carries prestige and allure for factual film-makers from across the globe. The films on the Radio Times Readers’ Choice Award shortlist were chosen by a jury of industry experts, film-makers, channel commissioners, genre experts and representatives of Radio Times, and include some of the most talked-about documentaries of the last year.

David Butcher, Radio Times Deputy Television Editor, said: “Documentaries make the world a little more 3D, they connect us and show us who we are. The ones that do all this best are celebrated each year by The Grierson Trust. Radio Times has teamed up with the Trust to highlight documentaries that didn’t just impress industry insiders this year but resonated across the nation’s living rooms and left a mark on the wider culture. We’d love you to take a moment to think which of them connected most with you personally and please, give it your vote.

Voting for the Radio Times Readers’ Choice Award is open now and every vote will go into a draw to win a pair of tickets to attend the awards ceremony, hosted by Sue Perkins on Monday 3 November at the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre in London, plus a Sky TV package free for a year and a wi-fi enabled Sky+ HD box. Votes can be made by post, with an entry form in this week’s Radio Times, or online at where there are also clips of all the shortlisted programmes. Voting closes on Monday 20 October 2014.

Chairman of The Grierson Trust, Lorraine Heggessey said: “The Grierson Awards honour the best documentary makers in the world, judged and rewarded by their peers. The Radio Times Readers’ Choice Award brings the voice of the viewer who engaged with and enjoyed some of the most talked about films of the year. Their recognition will be the icing on the cake, garnering the film-maker with the praise of his peers and public alike. But it's going to be a tough choice for viewers. I wish them all good luck."

The winners of Grierson 2014: The 42nd British Documentary Awards will be announced in a star-studded ceremony on 3 November.
