Hear from Dershe Samaria, co-founder of Nuwave Pictures, who took part in Grierson DocLab in 2013.

Dershe talks us through her journey into the world of factual television and how Grierson DocLab helped her on the way.

Dershe Samaria

It is fair to say that my journey into the media industry was far from traditional. Unable to get a job at entry level as a runner/researcher, my creative partner and I decided, out of the struggle to be heard, to go it alone and start an independent production company; Nuwave Pictures.

Soon after I was selected by The Grierson Trust who were in search for the best young, rising documentary talent for Grierson DocLab. This exposed me to some of the top players in the television industry (commissioners, controllers, distributors) whom I still maintain close relationships with and have helped to shape my career today as mentors.

As I discussed with Martha Keaney in my interview on BBC World at One; one of the hardest things for me was simply learning the language of the industry. I had some of the best access stories but no idea how to articulate them in TV terms. Grierson DocLab introduced me to TV culture, something that is taken for granted but highly important for anyone trying to navigate through this competitive industry.

In a world and especially in the TV sphere where my age, race and gender sadly work against me, Grierson DocLab has been one of my biggest supporters.

After DocLab I went on to become the recipient of the Discovery Channel’s rising Factual Talent Scholarship where for the first time I received formal training at the National Film & Television School.

Most recently I was selected as a Ones to Watch talent at the Edinburgh Television Festival where I represented my company.

Nuwave Pictures is now mentored by Norma Wisnevitz from Channel 4’s Growth Fund as well as All3Media’s Steven Brown.

Nuwave Pictures has just completed its first feature length documentary ‘Standing Among The Living’ which is currently airing on BBC World Service and has also been selected for the Miami Film Festival.

As we continue to grow, we aim to join forces with the best indies in the industry. We have started by co-developing a slate of exciting shows with the leaders of global formats; Studio Lambert. As this journey continues, Nuwave Pictures is striving to create some of the freshest and most exciting content of this age.
