Read all about Nali's placements at two production companies
The Grierson Trust were very accommodating in matching me with placements that tailored to my interest in archive documentary.
I was very fortunate enough to be put onto industry placements with Box To Box Films and Lightbox which I could not have been happier with.
Working with Box To Box was the perfect introduction to the world of archive. The project I joined was in the early stages of production and so I was tasked with gathering as much material as I could. Within this, I was given a detailed overview of archive sourcing and quickly found myself diving into deep rabbit holes on the hunt for useful footage. Furthermore, I was responsible for logging previously sourced archive which ranged from short documentaries to TV segments and news reports that dated over forty years. As someone who enjoys looking back at history, watching this otherwise rare and unseen material was an absolute joy.
Soon after my time with Box To Box came to an end I was swiftly put into contact with Lightbox and began my second placement there. After having learned a great deal of pre-production at Box To Box, I felt my time at Lightbox was the perfect follow-up, where I got a good look into the vast world of post-production. I was shown the extensive process involved in clearing footage through licensing rights and the series of paperwork needed to edit projects across multiple distributors. This was most prominent when assisting on the upcoming Princess Diana project The Princess, where I completed scripts for various cuts of the film, as well as helped manage the edit decision list.
Overall, I can say I really enjoyed my experience and would like to thank The Grierson Trust as well as Box To Box and Lightbox for taking me in. I am very grateful for the opportunity and happy to have been offered an extension by Lightbox to work as a full-time Junior Archive researcher for a further 12 weeks.
