Editing trainee Sladana on her placement and mentorship
I had such an incredible time during my 6-month placement with Raw TV. It was a huge privilege to work with such an experienced editor, Simon Barker, whose body of work speaks for itself - I remember looking up his IMDb before our interview and was blown away by how many docs he’d worked on that I’ve enjoyed in recent years!
I found it so inspiring to watch Simon and our amazing director, Colette Camden, shape a unique and sensitive story and adapt to various challenges. It was also fascinating to see how each cut was an improvement on the last, even in the smallest of ways such as by changing a few lines of sync which elevated the story to another level.
Having the opportunity to finally be on this side of production (and no longer cooped up in an MCR!) has taught me so much about the filmmaking process and just being around discussions with the team has been invaluable in seeing collaboration at play, and hearing about what needs to be considered when making a doc. The entire experience has given me a new perspective on documentary storytelling, and I really love that I’m now able to better articulate how I feel about aspects like structure, narrative and tone.
I’m excited to continue working as a freelance Assistant Editor until I’m ready to step up to editing and I can't recommend this programme enough for anybody that wants to reach the next stage in their career in documentary. I’m so grateful to The Grierson Trust for their support and for constantly championing and encouraging us. Without this scheme, I definitely wouldn’t be where I am now so thank you to everyone who makes this all possible!
