Mentorship Match: Amy Flanagan and Nerea Zambrano
Hear from Amy Flanagan - Co-Creative Director/SVP Unscripted at HiddenLight and mentor for Nerea Zambrano - plus Nerea, on the impact of the Grierson DocLab mentorship relationship they have developed since Nerea completed her DocLab New Entrants training last year.

Before mentoring for the Grierson Trust, I was a Grierson Trustee for a few years and was more involved in the trust and helping interview and select trainees.
Yen’s work running DocLab and the trainee scheme is brilliant launchpad for those wanting to join the industry but it’s been a particularly difficult couple of years particularly for people at entry level.
Grierson gave me a really clear framework for the sessions but Nerea herself came really focussed and prepared each time – she started doing work experience at HiddenLight and then has gone on to a variety of really premium companies where she’s learnt both production and development skills. I’ve been really impressed with how strategic she’s been and how keen she’s been for constructive feedback in each role she’s taken on.
We’ve continued to stay in touch beyond the six sessions in an informal way – we see each other every four-to-six weeks still to touch base, and I’m really happy to continue to see her as she moves through her career and might need different guidance.

Having a mentor as I start my career in documentaries has proved incredibly valuable and enriching. Amy encourages me to ask questions and make the most of any roles and companies I go into, having an idea of things I want to achieve and work on. She has also kindly introduced me to her network. It’s been great to learn from her career trajectory, shows she’s worked on like the iconic 24 Hours in A&E, alongside the behind-the-scenes intricacies of blue lights shows, and her work as a commissioner and now as a creative director. Her perspective and insight have equipped me with knowledge and in turn, confidence, helping me navigate the industry at a particularly challenging time.
I’m grateful to have her connection and support – someone I can turn to with questions, rely on as a brilliant sounding board for ideas, and trust for a friendly listening ear and motivating push when needed.
The Grierson team have been brilliant in facilitating this mentorship, regularly checking in and offering tips on how to make the most of it. Establishing clear goals at the start of the process was particularly useful and made for some interesting discussions on specific documentaries and editorial choices. I’m excited to continue learning and growing with Amy’s guidance and I can’t thank The Grierson Trust enough for setting this up!
