Read about Coleen's DocLab placement at Box to Box

For my Grierson DocLab placement, I did a two-month placement at Box to Box films, working as a Researcher on their new season of Six Nations: Full Contact.

Grierson DocLab 2023 trainee, Coleen Brennan completed her work placement with Box to Box.

I only had experience as a Runner before my placement at B2B and was really keen to make that next step to Researcher as I am very set on working in Editorial. It was nice being in one specific role at the company because I felt as though I could get fully immersed in the team. My first couple weeks in the role were spent doing a lot of internet research on different rugby players and putting together character documents from the information. I then flagged any stand outs to the team which they could then pursue in interviews. I also spent a lot of time creating spreadsheets and ways to manage the large amount of data that was constantly being updated. This was due to the fact we had six nations with embedded teams shooting most days of the week. Therefore, it was important to have an easy way of accessing key moments, so that no story points get lost.

I was lucky enough to get the chance to assist on two shoots, one at the Six Nations match Scotland vs France, and also at Scotland vs England. I was given the opportunity to create a shot list for Edinburgh GV’s, and then go out and assist the DoP when capturing them. This came naturally to me as I grew up in Edinburgh and know the city like the back of my hand. It was nice being a tour guide for the day! At the matches I was in the press box, where I would log all the key moments in the match, and if they included any of the players we are following. This was a great experience, and I even got to see Scotland win the Calcutta cup yet again!

Working alongside the other Researcher, Series Producer and Story Producer has been a great experience. It gave me a better understanding of the roles in television, and the role of story producer seems really interesting! I really enjoyed the mixture of office and location work. My organisational skills and understanding of software like Sonix, Airtable and Excel has vastly improved.

Overall, my time at B2B has been great and given me a varied and diverse set of skills which has given me a confidence I didn’t have before. The team treated me as a member of staff and gave me responsibilities which allowed me to show my full potential. My time there was extended by a week to see the production through to the end, which was a really rewarding feeling. I feel like it has elevated my skillset and given my docs career a great kick-start.

Prior to finishing my placement with Box to Box, I was offered a job at Lion TV as a booking researcher on Homes Under the Hammer. I was worried about my future given the state of the Industry at the moment, so getting the job was a great feeling. I am currently two weeks into my one year contract and loving it so far!
