DocLab trainee Dhillon on his placement and independent film work
As part of the Grierson DocLab 2023 I had the opportunity to spend a six-week placement working with Firecrest Films.
Dhillon Clarke, Grierson DocLab core 2023 trainee.
My placement
I worked at Firecrest Films as runner/ DIT on the new series of Highland Cops.
The placement gave me the opportunity to become proficient in data wrangling using Shotput Pro and to develop my understanding of the post-production workflow for unscripted TV. I also worked on a variety of other tasks, including updating logs, driving, organising kit prior to shoots and delivering wrangle drives to the machine room. I spent time on location with PDs in Inverness and Fortwilliam, supporting them on location and keeping notes for use in story logs.
During my time with Firecrest, I also gained a valuable insight into the workflow of a broadcast documentary series and I attended daily meetings with the office-based production team and series producer, David McConnell.
The team at Firecrest were very supportive and I hope to work with them again in the future.
My own work
I spent the weeks following my time at Firecrest working on post-production for my most recent documentary short and Masters film project, Katya, which I am currently submitting to the festival circuit. I have recently graduated with an MA in Filmmaking from the University of the West of Scotland.
I have also screened my short documentary Fishball Revolution, which I made as part of my Masters, at Shortscape and Edinburgh Short Film Festival.
The opportunity to screen my work publicly for the first time has been extremely rewarding and I'm pleased to say the film has received a positive reception.
