Ask Our Alumni webinar: your questions answered

The recording of the Ask Our Alumni 2025 webinar is now available to watch back. For any of the questions we didn't quite have time to cover during the session, we've written answers below...

Four Grierson DocLab: New Entrants alumni took part in a webinar to answer questions from prospective applicants.

Catch up on the Zoom session where past trainees answered your questions about the Grierson DocLab: New Entrants programme.

Additional Questions:

What are the key things/qualities you are looking for in applicants?

The most important thing is a love of documentaries and factual TV, and a passion or drive to work in the sector.

Can you provide more detail on how inclusive the programme is i.e. what % BAME?

The make-up of the 12 participants is different each year. But over the past iterations of the programme, we have seen:

  • 66% female, 1% non-binary and 33% male
  • 42% ethnic minority background
  • 20% disabled people
  • 64% based outside of London

In the application we have to pitch a show - how do we do this in writing?

If you read the Guidance and FAQs document, you will see the character count and questions that prompt you about your show idea. We do not expect a fully formed pitch deck or idea at this stage, but if you answer the prompts provided in the guidance, you should be able to write out your idea.

Is there any way to connect with and ask questions to more alumni? LinkedIn, or emails?

You may wish to look up our alumni online. You can see a list of alumni on the website.

When would we expect a response from applications so that we can plan work arrangements etc.?

When you submit your application, you will receive a confirmation email with all of your answers. This will also confirm that we will be in touch with applicants to invite them to interview by Friday 21 March.

Can people from outside the UK apply? Or international students?

You can yes, you just have to have the right to live and work in the UK. If you are a student, you must be in your final year of study, with the right to remain and work in the UK.

Can you apply if you are from the Chanel Islands?

As people from the Chanel Islands have the right to live and work in the UK, yes.

What is the application process like for people with disability?

This depends on each individual’s access requirements. We have an online application form which asks for written answers, but we will gladly accept filmed answers to the questions, or audio recording. If you could like to enquire about other access needs, you can email training@griersontrust.org. Our Guidelines and FAQs documents are also available in Large Text form and Easy Read.

What is the accommodation for the residential like for people with access needs?

The residential accommodation is a shared house. A member of the team will work closely with trainees with access needs to determine how best to support them. If this includes a separate room, then this can be accommodated.

Who can I contact if I have specific questions about the application process?

You can email training@griersontrust.org or call +44 (0)1462 618 479
