The Grierson DocLab: Development programme is run in partnership with Netflix and seeks to diversify talent within documentary development roles.

This project is also supported by the ScreenSkills Unscripted TV Skills Fund which invests in training for the unscripted workforce thanks to contributions from BBC, Channel 4, Sky, Hearst Networks UK, Discovery UK, Channel 5, Netflix, ITV, Amazon, UKTV and S4C matched by production companies.

About the programme

The Grierson DocLab: Development programme is a professional development initiative designed for eight early to mid-career practitioners already working in factual television and documentary.

The programme is aimed at individuals who have accumulated three-to-eight years’ experience in the sector and have at least one experience working as a development researcher or development AP reflected on their CV.

The focus is on applicants who want to build on their existing experience in development; the programme will enable them to refine their editorial voice, develop their skills further, and support stepping into future senior creative roles within the industry.

Trainees will receive intensive training and mentoring from leading creative directors and development specialists, alongside in-depth workshops focused on high-level development skills such as securing access, shaping returnable formats, editorial decision-making, and strategic pitching.

To create an accelerated learning environment, the hybrid programme also offers much sought after industry access (including opportunities to engage directly with UK indies, broadcasters and streamers), insight into commissioning processes, and the chance to expand professional networks at a senior level.
