Read about Nerea's work placement experience at HiddenLight
A couple years back I attended the RTS Convention where Hillary and Chelsea Clinton spoke about their new production company, HiddenLight. Two years later, getting to work on the development and production teams has been an amazing opportunity I wouldn’t have had without The Grierson Trust!
Grierson DocLab core 2023 trainee, Nerea Zambrano
Monday 10am. I woke up bright and early and got ready to make my way to work. After having my first Earl Grey cuppa of the day, I travelled over to my desk and logged in my new email address. For my first task I watched In the Shadow of Beirut, which is currently making the rounds on the festival circuit, and I wrote the copy for their ShareDoc donation page.
Two weeks passed and me and Microsoft Docs had become more than acquainted. I did lots of research, tracking down and note-taking. Also, tree branch-cutting and wattle-fence-building… (one of the in-person days happened to be a voluntary day out!)
By the end of my placement HiddenLight won an Emmy for one of their first projects, In Her Hands, a feature documentary about the first female mayor of Afghanistan. The first of many, I'm sure. I couldn’t have asked for a better place and team to start learning about documentary-making, different career paths, brainstorming and pitching to broadcasters and streamers, etc.
The scale and level of access that a company like HiddenLight has, made joining their weekly brainstorming meeting later on that much more exciting. It was my first experience of development and now I need to someday be at the level the team were bouncing ideas off each other and keeping across releases and different subject knowledge. It's a lot of fun!
