Read about Ollie's placement at Candour Productions
When I first joined Candour Productions in Leeds, I was due to stay for eight weeks. Six months later and I'm still here! It’s safe to say that my time here has been an incredible start to my career in this industry.

From the very beginning, I was made to feel like a valued member of the development team. My ideas were listened to and taken seriously, which gave me the confidence to contribute fully. Much of my time has been spent researching and pitching ideas, and if there’s one thing I’ve quickly learned, it’s that most pitches won’t make it past the first stage. But that’s part of the process, and I’ve come to enjoy the challenge of refining ideas, developing them from a topline concept into one-pagers, and helping to shape pitch decks that really bring those ideas to life.
Working at Candour has been an eye-opening education in the documentary landscape. I’ve developed a stronger understanding of the different commissioning processes at the biggest broadcasters and streamers, the kinds of stories that resonate with them, and how trends shape what gets greenlit. It’s been fascinating to see how creative and strategic thinking meet in development, finding not only what stories exist out there, but also spotting where the gaps are.
I’ve also had the privilege of sitting in on commissioner meetings and taking notes for sensitive projects, something Candour is known for handling with care and integrity. Being part of those discussions has shown me how much thought and empathy goes into developing documentaries that deal with difficult real-world issues.
One of the most exciting moments of my placement involved reacting quickly to the news; I helped research and prepare pitch materials for a project based on The Salt Path controversy. Dozens of companies submitted ideas, but Candour’s pitch was successful and went on to be commissioned. It’s been hugely rewarding to see that journey unfold from concept to production - and because my placement has been extended until at least the end of June 2026. I’ll even get to see the project air. It will forever be the first thing I worked on - a very special moment. This extension will take me to almost a full year - a continuous stretch almost unheard of in the industry, showing how great of a fit Candour has been.
Looking back, I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to the industry. I've been a sponge, and it’s incredible to think how much I've learnt so far. This placement has taught me to be reactive, resilient, and curious. It has shown me just how collaborative and creative the world of development can be. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone at Candour Productions for trusting me, challenging me, and helping me grow. What started as an eight-week opportunity has become the foundation for what I hope will be a long and exciting career making documentaries!
