2022 Production Management trainee, Abi on her placement and mentorship

Changing career can be a daunting prospect. Especially when you’re pivoting into something you have no experience in - which was the case for me in TV Production Management. I decided it was time to try out something new, a different type of challenge where I would never have two days look the same.

The Grierson Trust’s Grierson DocLab In Focus: Production Management scheme, run in partnership with Netflix, looked like the perfect fit; targeted at applicants looking to use their transferable skills, a mix of practical and theoretical training, and that coveted Netflix production placement. I was so chuffed to gain a place on the scheme, and it has thoroughly exceeded my expectations. We had informative and interesting training led by Birte Pedersen, with a star-studded line-up of industry speakers with experience on dozens of projects. This was a great introduction into the world of Production Management, a very friendly atmosphere to ask questions and widen our understanding.

After a glam evening at the Grierson Awards last November, I was asked to interview for a placement with Nicky Varley, Head of Production at Curious Films. I was already aware of the company as one of my predecessors on the scheme was still working there 18 months after her initial placement, which I took to be a huge green flag! I started a month later, working across a Netflix series and Netflix feature doc, both at different stages of their production. I was given space to ask for guidance, responsibility on my own smaller projects and a variety of tasks to expand my experience. It’s been a fantastic opportunity to be able to work with incredibly talented people who are generous with their time, and I have now seen first-hand the brilliant work that Production Management do. I’ve helped with postproduction paperwork on other projects, seen the editorial crafting process up close and have had a hand in planning several shoots in London and abroad. My confidence has grown with every new element of responsibility and I'm now pulling my weight as one of the team.

I had hoped to enjoy TV Production Management, but I wasn’t prepared to truly thrive as much as I have. It’s taken all of the best bits of being organised, logical and efficient and wrapped it into one job that feels fast paced and satisfying. I know a huge part of my positive experience has been down to the welcoming attitude of the people I work with, as well as my mentor Lou Murray at Minnow Films. Our monthly catch ups are something I look forward to, and having the chance to explore topics and ask questions freely of somebody so experienced is absolutely invaluable.

I suppose what I’m trying to get across is that whilst changing career can be daunting, the Grierson DocLab In Focus: Production Management scheme has been a lifeline in terms of guiding me along that process. It has set me up professionally and equipped me with the knowledge and contacts I will need to pursue a career in PM, far faster than I ever would have achieved alone. My confidence has come on in bounds and I have just recently extended my time with Curious Films, which was incredibly affirming. If this move if is something you’re considering, I can thoroughly, utterly recommend taking that leap with The Grierson Trust.
